I decided to focus on Agnes Denes’ “Wheatfield- A Confrontation” for my Bridge 2 project because of its striking juxtaposition between the figure, the wheat field and the city looming in the background. After researching Denes’ project, which is the wheat field depicted in the photograph as opposed to the photograph itself, I learned that food scarcity was one of the many issues Denes tried to address with her piece. This led me to the concept of “food deserts”, which are urban neighborhoods lacking in access to fresh produce and supermarkets. Many of these areas are primarily black/Hispanic. Compounded with the idea of wasted urban spaces, like the garbage lot Denes’ used for the site of her project, I decided to illustrate a potential green roof idea for NYC apartments. I envisioned these spaces as localized community gardens, maintained and used by the residents of the building.
